For non-open fractures, joint separations and severe strains, an ice pack can be applied in transit to help control swelling and pain.

Treatment for a broken bone will vary depending upon the severity of the fracture and the location of the break. In most cases, you will be required to wear a brace or splint while the bone heals. In some cases, orthopedic surgery may be necessary to insert plates or screws to properly support and align the bones during the healing process. Some types of fractures do not require a cast, splint or surgery. However, it is important to avoid stressful activities until your fracture has healed.
